GMC Brigadier Truck Fuel Tanks

Frequently Asked Questions About GMC Brigadier Truck Fuel Tanks

What sizes and materials are available for GMC Brigadier fuel tanks?

GMC Brigadier fuel tanks are typically available in a range of capacities to match different chassis configurations, with aluminum being the most common material due to its corrosion resistance and lighter weight compared to steel. When choosing a tank, confirm the capacity and mounting dimensions match your specific Brigadier model year and configuration before ordering.

How do I know if a replacement fuel tank will fit my specific GMC Brigadier?

Fit depends on factors like wheelbase, frame rail spacing, and the original tank's mounting bracket configuration. Always verify measurements including tank diameter, length, and strap or bracket mounting points against your truck's existing tank or service manual specifications rather than relying on model year alone, since Brigadier trucks were built in several configurations over their production run.

What comes included with a replacement fuel tank purchase?

Most fuel tanks are sold as the tank body itself, and may or may not include mounting straps, brackets, sending units, or fuel caps depending on the specific listing. Check the product description carefully to confirm what hardware is included so you can budget for any additional components needed for a complete installation.

Can I install a new fuel tank myself, or should I have a professional do it?

Fuel tank replacement involves working with fuel lines, venting systems, and heavy components that must be properly secured to the frame, so many owners with mechanical experience and the right tools can handle this job. However, if you are not comfortable disconnecting fuel lines safely or ensuring proper strap tension and sealing, having a qualified diesel technician complete the installation is a safer choice.

How do I maintain a fuel tank to prevent leaks or corrosion over time?

Regularly inspect mounting straps for wear, check for rust or pitting on steel tanks, and look for signs of fuel staining around seams, the sending unit, and drain plug. Keeping the tank clean of road debris and salt buildup, along with periodically checking strap tightness, helps extend the service life of both aluminum and steel tanks.
