Ford F450-F550 Truck Drive Axle Springs & Hangers

Frequently Asked Questions About Ford F450-F550 Truck Drive Axle Springs & Hangers

What do drive axle springs and hangers do on my Ford F450/F550?

Drive axle springs (leaf springs) support the weight of the truck and its load over the rear or drive axle, while spring hangers are the mounting brackets that secure the springs to the frame. Together, they help maintain ride height, control axle movement, and ensure the suspension carries and distributes load properly.

How do I know if my springs or hangers need to be replaced?

Common signs include sagging ride height, uneven load distribution, cracked or broken leaf springs, excessive bouncing or sway, cracked welds on hangers, or visible rust and metal fatigue at the mounting points. If you notice these symptoms, it is a good idea to have the suspension inspected before continuing to haul heavy loads.

Will these springs and hangers fit my specific F450 or F550 model year and configuration?

Fitment can vary based on model year, cab/chassis configuration, axle type, and factory GVWR rating. Before ordering, check the part listing for the specific years and configurations it is designed for, and compare it against your truck's axle and suspension specs to confirm compatibility.

Are these springs rated for heavy-duty or commercial use?

Many of the springs and hangers in this category are built to handle the higher load capacities typical of F450/F550 chassis, which are often used in commercial, towing, or vocational applications. Always check the listed capacity rating for each part to ensure it matches the load requirements of your truck and its intended use.

Can I install drive axle springs and hangers myself, or should I have a professional do it?

Replacing leaf springs and hangers involves working under a loaded vehicle, removing fasteners that may be rusted or torqued to high specifications, and properly aligning the new components. If you have experience with heavy-duty suspension work and the right tools and lift equipment, it can be done in a shop setting. Otherwise, we recommend having the installation performed by a qualified technician to ensure proper fit, safety, and performance.
