Frequently Asked Questions About Volvo WIA Hoods & Related

What is a Volvo WIA hood, and how do I know if it fits my truck?

The "WIA" designation refers to a specific Volvo hood style used across certain Volvo VN and VNL model years. Because Volvo updated hood designs multiple times, it's important to match the WIA style to your truck's actual hood shape and mounting points rather than relying on model year alone. If you're not sure whether your truck uses a WIA-style hood, compare the contour, headlight openings, and hinge locations on your existing hood to the product photos, or contact our parts team with your VIN or hood measurements for confirmation before ordering.

What material are these hoods made from, and how does that affect durability?

Replacement hoods in this category are typically made from fiberglass composite, which matches the OEM construction used by Volvo. Fiberglass hoods offer a good balance of weight savings and impact resistance, and they can be repaired if lightly damaged rather than requiring full replacement. As with any fiberglass part, proper support during installation and storage helps prevent stress cracks, especially around hinge and latch mounting points.

Do these hoods come primed, painted, or unfinished?

Most hoods in this category ship primed and ready for paint rather than finished in a specific color, since Volvo trucks are painted in a wide range of fleet and owner-operator color schemes. This lets you match your existing paint code exactly. If a specific listing includes a painted or gel-coated finish, that will be noted in the product description, so it's worth checking each listing individually before you order.

What's involved in installing a replacement hood, and can I do it myself?

Installing a Volvo WIA hood generally involves transferring or replacing the hinges, latches, headlight assemblies, and any brackets from your old hood, then aligning and securing the new hood to the tilt mechanism. This is a job most experienced shop technicians or mechanically inclined owner-operators can handle, but it typically requires at least two people due to the size and weight of the hood, plus care to get panel gaps and alignment right. If you're replacing related hardware like hinges or latches at the same time, it's easier to do that before final hood installation.

Should I replace related hardware like hinges, latches, or brackets along with the hood?

If your original hinges, latches, springs, or mounting brackets are worn, cracked, or rusted, it's a good idea to replace them at the same time you install a new hood. Reusing damaged hardware on a new hood can lead to poor alignment, uneven panel gaps, or premature wear on the new part. Many customers in this category order the hood along with matching hinges or latch kits to ensure everything fits and functions correctly from day one.
