Peterbilt 388 Drive Axle Springs & Hangers

Frequently Asked Questions About Peterbilt 388 Drive Axle Springs & Hangers

What do drive axle springs and hangers actually do on my Peterbilt 388?

Drive axle springs support the weight of the truck and cargo over the rear axles while absorbing road shock, and hangers are the mounting brackets that attach those springs to the frame. Together they keep the axle properly positioned, maintain ride height, and help distribute load evenly across the suspension system.

How do I know if a spring or hanger fits my specific Peterbilt 388?

Fit depends on your truck's suspension type, axle configuration, and model year, since the 388 was built with different suspension setups over its production run. Always check the part number against your truck's VIN or existing component before ordering, and compare spring capacity ratings and hanger bolt patterns to ensure a proper match.

What are common signs that my drive axle springs or hangers need to be replaced?

Look for visible cracks, rust-through, or sagging in the springs, as well as uneven ride height or a leaning truck. Hangers that show cracking, elongated bolt holes, or looseness at the frame connection are also common failure points. Unusual noises over bumps or a rougher ride can indicate worn or broken components.

Are these springs and hangers made from the same material as factory-original parts?

Most replacement springs are made from heat-treated alloy steel similar to OEM construction, and hangers are typically cast or forged steel designed to handle the same load ratings as original equipment. Finish options vary by manufacturer, with some parts left in raw steel and others coated for added corrosion resistance, so check the product listing for specifics on the part you are considering.

Can I install drive axle springs and hangers myself, or should I have a shop do it?

This is heavy-duty suspension work that requires lifting and supporting the truck safely, removing significant load-bearing components, and torquing fasteners to precise specifications. If you have the right tools, lift equipment, and experience with heavy-duty suspension systems, it can be done in a shop setting, but many owner-operators choose to have this work done by a qualified technician to ensure proper alignment and safety.
