International 4700-4900 Drive Axle Springs-Hang

Frequently Asked Questions About International 4700-4900 Drive Axle Springs-Hangers

What are drive axle spring hangers and what do they do?

Spring hangers are the mounting brackets that attach the leaf springs of your drive axle suspension to the truck frame. They bear the load transferred between the axle and frame and keep the suspension properly aligned. If a hanger cracks, bends, or wears out, it can cause uneven ride height, abnormal tire wear, or a shifting axle.

How do I know if I need to replace my spring hanger versus just the bushing?

If you are hearing clunking noises, noticing the axle shifting side to side, or seeing visible cracks, rust-through, or elongated bolt holes in the hanger itself, the hanger likely needs replacement rather than just the bushing. Worn bushings alone typically cause looseness and noise without structural damage to the hanger casting. A close visual inspection, along with checking for movement when the truck is jacked up, will help you tell the difference.

Will these hangers fit my specific International 4700 or 4900 model year?

Spring hanger designs can vary by model year, frame configuration, and whether your truck has a single or tandem drive axle setup. Always check the part number against your truck's VIN or existing hanger before ordering, and compare mounting hole patterns and dimensions carefully. If you are unsure, our sales team can help confirm fitment based on your truck's specifications.

Are these hangers made from cast iron or steel, and does it matter?

Drive axle spring hangers are typically made from cast iron or ductile iron due to the heavy loads they carry. Cast components are strong under the constant compressive forces of daily hauling, but they can crack under sudden impact rather than bend. When replacing a hanger, matching the original material and design helps ensure the same load-bearing performance you're used to.

What tools and steps are involved in replacing a spring hanger?

Replacing a spring hanger is a heavier job than a simple bolt-on part. It generally involves safely supporting and unloading the axle, removing the spring and any U-bolts, unbolting or unwelding the old hanger from the frame, and properly torquing or welding the new one into place per manufacturer specifications. Because this affects suspension alignment and structural integrity, we recommend having the work done by a qualified truck technician or shop with the proper lifting and welding equipment.
