Frequently Asked Questions About GMC General Truck Hoods & Related

Will this hood fit my specific GMC General model and year?

GMC General trucks were built over several production years with some variation in body and hood mounting points. Always check the fitment notes listed on each product page and compare them against your truck's year and configuration before ordering. If you are unsure, our team can help confirm compatibility using your VIN or hood measurements.

What material are these hoods made from, and how durable is it?

Hoods in this category are typically constructed from fiberglass or sheet molded compound (SMC), which are common materials for heavy truck hood replacements. These materials offer good resistance to dents and corrosion compared to steel, but they can be more susceptible to cracking under heavy impact. Proper mounting and handling during installation will help maximize the lifespan of the hood.

Do these hoods come primed or painted, or will I need to paint them myself?

Most replacement hoods are sold primed and ready for paint rather than finished in a factory color match. This allows you to have the hood painted to match your truck's exact color and finish. Be sure to check the product description for the specific finish condition before purchasing.

What is involved in installing a replacement hood, and can I do it myself?

Installation generally involves removing the damaged or old hood from its hinge and latch points, then mounting the new hood and adjusting it for proper alignment and clearance. Many truck owners with mechanical experience handle this themselves, but a second set of hands is recommended due to the size and weight of the part. If you are not comfortable with the process, a professional truck body shop can ensure correct fitment and alignment.

Do hood hinges, latches, and other hardware need to be replaced at the same time?

In many cases, existing hinges, latches, and mounting hardware from your original hood can be reused if they are still in good working condition. However, if your hardware is worn, bent, or damaged, it is a good idea to replace it at the same time to ensure proper fit and secure operation of the new hood. Related hardware is often available alongside the hoods in this category.
