GMC General Truck Cab Lights

Frequently Asked Questions About GMC General Truck Cab Lights

What are cab lights and why do GMC General owners install them?

Cab lights, sometimes called cab marker lights or clearance lights, are the row of small lights mounted along the top of the truck cab or roofline. They help increase visibility of the truck's width and height to other drivers, and many owners also install them to give their GMC General a classic, custom big-rig look.

Will these cab lights fit my specific GMC General model?

Cab light kits are generally designed to fit the mounting points and roofline of the GMC General, but fitment can vary slightly depending on the year and cab configuration of your truck. Always check the product listing for specific fitment details, and compare mounting hole spacing and bracket style to your existing setup before ordering.

What materials and lens options are available for cab lights?

Cab lights are typically available with lens housings made from durable plastic or polycarbonate, chosen for their resistance to impact and UV exposure over time. Lens colors commonly include amber, red, clear, and smoked options, and many are available with LED lighting for improved brightness and longer service life compared to incandescent bulbs.

Are these cab lights legal and DOT compliant for use on the road?

Many cab lights sold for on-road use are manufactured to meet DOT and SAE standards, but compliance can depend on the specific light color, placement, and how the lights are wired into your truck's electrical system. It's important to check the product specifications for DOT certification and to follow your state and federal regulations regarding lighting color and placement.

How difficult is it to install cab lights on my GMC General?

Installation typically involves mounting the light housings to the existing brackets or drilled mounting points on the cab, then wiring them into your truck's marker light circuit. Basic hand tools and some familiarity with automotive wiring are usually enough for the job, though a wiring harness or grommets may be needed depending on whether you are replacing existing lights or adding new ones. If you are not comfortable working with electrical connections, having a professional installer handle the wiring is a good option.
